Candy Lightner, 1946-Present
Candy Lightner founded Mothers Against Drunk Driving, a nonprofit organization in the United States and Canada focused on stopping drunk driving, supporting families affected by drunk driving, preventing underage drinking and creating stricter impaired driving laws. Lightner’s family was impacted by a number of tragedies due to drunk and impaired drivers, including the traumatic killing of her 13-year-old daughter by a repeat DWI offender. Lightner worked tirelessly to shed light on the victims of drunk driving and to change the public’s attitude toward driving under the influence. Her efforts led to the creation of over 400 drunk driving laws across the country and continues to make a difference in reducing traffic crashes and saving lives.
