Nikki Giovanni, 1943 – Present
Nikki Giovanni is an American poet, writer, commentator, activist, and educator. Giovanni established Cincinnati’s first Black Arts Festival in 1967 and she published her first book of poems, Black Feeling, Black Talk, in 1968. The poems of Nikki Giovanni helped to define the African-American voice of the 1960s, ’70s and beyond. She was also a major force in the Black Arts movement. Giovanni has taught at Queens College, Rutgers, and Ohio State, and is currently a University Distinguished Professor at Virginia Tech. Following the Virginia Tech shooting in 2007, she delivered a chant-poem at a memorial for the shooting victims
