Sylvia Rivera was a Latina American drag queen who was a gay and transgender activist in the 1960s and 1970s. She’s known for participating in the Stonewall Riots of 1969 and establishing the political organization STAR. Sylvia fought vigorously against the exclusion of transgender people from the Sexual Orientation Non-Discrimination Act in New York, and was a loud and persistent voice for the rights of people of color and low-income queers and trans people.
