Tammy Duckworth, 1968-Present
Tammy Duckworth is an Iraq War Veteran and Purple Heart recipient. She was deployed in 2004 and later that year lost her legs and partial use of her right arm after being hit by a rocket-propelled grenade. After she recovered, Duckworth became the Director of the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs and in 2009 was appointed by President Obama as an Assistant Secretary of Veterans Affairs, where she worked to address the challenges faced by women and Native American veterans. Duckworth went on to serve two terms in the US House of Representative, becoming the first Thai American woman elected to Congress, and the first woman elected to Congress with a visible disability. In 2016, Duckworth was elected to the US Senate. Two years later, she became the first Senator to give birth while in office, and worked to secure a historic rules change to allow Senators to bring their infant children onto the Senate floor.
