Maya Ying Lin, a native of Ohio, is an American architectural designer and artist. Her parents emigrated from China to the United States before she was born. At 21, while an undergraduate at Yale University, Lin won a national design competition held for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial to be built on the National Mall in Washington D.C. Her entry, one of over 1,400 submissions included the names of nearly 58,000 American servicemen listed and etched into a V-shaped wall of black granite sunken into the ground. Although many controversies surrounded the monument, nearly blocking its construction, the memorial was built and finally unveiled in 1982. Lin continued on to design many projects, installations, and sculptures, including the Civil Rights Memorial in Montgomery, Alabama and Yale University’s Women’s Table, honoring the first female students admitted to the school.
