Saru Jayaraman, 1975-Present
Saru Jayaraman is an American attorney, author, and activist from Los Angeles, California. Following 9/11, together with the displaced World Trade Center workers, Jayaraman co-found the Restaurant Opportunities Centers (ROC). Jayaraman is the president of One Fair Wage, a national campaign to end all subminimum wages in the United States. She is an advocate for restaurant workers in the Bay Area and the Director of the Food Labor Research Center at the University of California, Berkeley. Jayaraman is a graduate of Yale Law School and the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. In 2005, she was profiled in the New York Times “Public Lives” section and named one of Crain’s “40 Under 40” in 2008. In 2014, she was recognized as a Champion of Change by the White House and SF Chronicle “Visionary of the Year” in 2019. Her book, Behind the Kitchen Door, is a national bestseller.
